The process is waste-free and very reliable. In fact, this plant has almost 90 percent availability.
Geothermal energy uses heat from below the earth’s crust to create steam that turns a turbine to produce electricity. Like wind and solar, geothermal energy emits no pollutants. Unlike wind and solar, it is available to serve customers around the clock, rain or shine, windy or not.
PNM is the first customer to utilize energy from the geothermal plant, and we have an agreement to purchase up to 10 megawatts of power. The new plant had an initial capacity of four megawatts and is projected to provide the power for up to 5,700 average households.
What Does It Cost?
Currently, geothermal electricity costs PNM 10 cents per kilowatt hour.
