Addressing Greenhouse Gas Emissions

PNM has a multi-part, long-term plan to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from power plants, helping position us for the changes ahead in the power industry. Our efforts include revising our generation portfolio and promoting energy efficiency programs and conservation initiatives. Doing so will help us serve our customers while meeting – or beating – all federal and state requirements.

Our Plans for Moving Forward:

  • PNM is planning to close down two coal units at San Juan Generating Station (SJGS) to reduce regional haze. The New Mexico Public Regulation commission approved the plan Dec. 2015, and generations will breathe cleaner air based on standards that will meet or exceed the Obama Administration’s goal of reducing GHG emissions by 17% from 2005 levels by 2020.
  • PNM has installed more than one million solar panels in New Mexico, and we continue to harness power from the wind.
  • We’re also investing in energy storage technology, with the hope that in the future, it will provide an effective way to use wind and solar power – even at times when the wind doesn’t blow and the sun doesn’t shine.
